Celebrating the past
"Several factors motivated Sr. Imelda and me to design a shield for JCHS. The only symbol used for the school at that time was the ram, which was a nice mascot for sports, but did not reflect other aspects of the school. Because our sisters, the Adrian Dominican Sisters, had ministered in the school since its opening in the 1930's, we felt that it was important to leave a visible sign of their presence. We also wanted to incorporate some of the history of the school. Consequently, we looked at the shields of the Order of Preachers (which is the official name for the Dominican Order), Pope John XXIII (the John in John Carroll), Bishop Coleman Carroll of Miami, (the Carroll of John Carroll), and the Diocese of Palm Beach. Imelda is an artist with a great eye for design, so she could position the various parts chosen from each shield into a pleasing arrangement. The finished product was definitely the combined efforts of both of us – my ideas and her execution. So, our shield was born!"
- Sister Jean Crane, May 2010, quoted on how the original JCHS shield was born
UPDATED VISUAL IDENITY LAUNCHED:
One element of our theme for the 2010-2011 year includes updating our John Carroll High School visual identity. Through this year-long process, the school images, logo, crest, seal, ram, colors, fonts, etc. have been professionally recreated. The goal of this project is to preserve the history of the school's icons, establish uniform graphic standards, update the school's visual identity, and keep pace with technology by creating images in high resolution media.
It has been a pleasure learning the meaning behind the symbols of the school, celebrating John Carroll High School's original graphic designers, and establishing standards that will remain with the school for its future. We hope you join with us in celebrating our past, embracing our present, and cultivating our future.
