Service Hours
There are two reasons for having students perform service hours. As a Catholic school we see the importance of doing service hours as a way living our faith. It is all well and good to teach the principles of Christianity in the classroom but some things are better taught by experience and in fact have to be "lived out" in order for us to understand what it means to be a Christian. Jesus taught by example. He washed is disciples feet at the "Last Supper" in John's Gospel and then challenged his disciples to a life of service. In Matthew's Gospel, he speaks about the final judgment in Chapter 25 and tells those who have fed the hungry, clothed the naked, of given drink to the thirsty that they are to be rewarded. So we see doing service hours as an integral part of Christian education.

The basic idea is to perform a work of service for people in need or work for non-for-profit business. Doing work for a for-profit business is not considered doing service hours even if the student is not paid. For example, filing papers for a parent's law firm or doctor's office is not considered to be valid work for service hours. Being a candy striper in a hospital would be valid service hours. For underclassmen, that can't drive, we encourage them to help in the neighborhoods. Doing things like babysitting for a single parent or mowing the yard for an elderly neighbor are permissible. But as students get their own transportation they should be moving outside of the neighborhood and into the wider community to do their hours. A wide variety of organizations are available in the four county area that are happy to have student volunteers performed any number of tasks.
Performing service hours is considered to be part of the religion curriculum for all four years and the lack of performance of the required hours results in the loss of points on the final for each semester. 2 points per hour not performed, will be deducted from the exam grade.
These are the requirements for each student per year at John Carroll:
- Freshman 25 service hours
- Sophomore 25 Service hours
- Juniors 25 service hours
- Seniors 25 Service hours
Total: 100 service hours. These service hours are also applicable for each student who meets the requirements to qualify for Bright futures.
