JOHN CARROLL HIGH SCHOOL PREPARES TO LAY FOUNDATION FOR NEW ATHLETIC FIELD HOUSE

FORT PIERCE – As the unprecedented 2020-2021 school year comes to an end, John Carroll High School is preparing to lay the foundation for its new Athletic Field House.

John Carroll Athletic Director and Head Varsity Football Coach Mickey Groody has been anticipating the building of the field house since he started at the high school in 2018.

“As one can imagine, the COVID-19 pandemic halted our field house plan, but we picked back up this past January and it has already proven that our community and stakeholders are excited and invested in this opportunity,” Groody said. “This project is the first step in our JCHS Athletics: Vision 2025 Plan, which includes three phases to create a state-of-the art athletic complex here, making John Carroll a true leader on the Treasure Coast. It is a great time to be a part of the JC Nation!”

The field house will be the only one of its kind on the Treasure Coast, following suit with schools such as IMG Academy and St. Thomas Aquinas. The Athletics Department has generated over $100,000 in in-kind and monetary donations for the project since January. This project will include a state of the art weight room and a turf practice area for speed and agility training. This turf space will be designed to include portable soccer nets, portable pitching mounds, and drop-down batting cages will be installed, giving all students an area to practice in the case of inclement weather.

Incorporated into the building’s design is  an office for John Carroll’s full-time Certified Athletic Trainer Ms. Kathy Nesmith and a large work space, as the school continues to focus on its sports medicine and in-house rehabilitation programs. John Carroll is the only high school on the Treasure Coast with a full-time athletic trainer.

The field house will feature a wrap-around porch designed to serve as VIP seating for athletic competitions and an event space for John Carroll’s athletic programs.

John Carroll educates students from Martin, Okeechobee, St. Lucie and Indian River Counties. The school offers 22 sports, including football, baseball, volleyball, softball, girls’ and boys’ lacrosse, girls’ and boys’ soccer, girls’ and boys’ basketball, girls’ and boys’ swimming and diving, girls’ and boys’ golf, cheerleading, girls’ and boys’ cross country, girls’ and boys’ track and field, girls’ and boys’ tennis, and girls’ weightlifting. With 64% of the student body participating in athletics, the field house will be beneficial to the majority of the school.

The John Carroll Athletics program has been recognized at the local, state and national levels, with many students going on to play at the collegiate and professional levels.

“At John Carroll, we seek to educate our students in mind, body and spirit. We know that our school offers students a top-notch Catholic education, and we see this new Athletic Field House as an extension of our mission to develop the whole child,” said Corey Heroux, John Carroll principal. “I look forward to seeing the ways in which it benefits our entire school community. I know that God has great things in store for our school!”

The field house is scheduled to be completed this fall.
