JOHN CARROLL HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS PARTICIPATE IN DAY OF SERVICE WITH LOCAL NONPROFITS

FORT PIERCE – John Carroll High School is happy to announce that its senior class volunteered at six local nonprofit organizations during their annual senior retreat, with this year being a day of service to the local community.

John Carroll seniors and faculty and staff members were divided into six groups to volunteer with the Treasure Coast Food Bank, United Against Poverty St. Lucie County, Mustard Seed Ministries, Heathcote Botanical Gardens, St. Anastasia Catholic School, and the effort against homelessness with St. Anastasia Catholic Church.

“Our goal is to connect students to service that is meaningful to them, so they learn to appreciate who and why they serve,”said Jennie Capezza, John Carroll Director of Campus Ministry. “We are beginning to see a shift in culture and mindset as students identify with the types of service that bring them fulfillment and joy.”

Students at the Treasure Coast Food Bank, United Against Poverty, and Mustard Seed Ministries assisted with stocking and organizing the shelves in their warehouses and storage rooms. Seniors at the Heathcote Botanical Gardens cleaned the grounds and landscaped, while volunteers at St. Anastasia School volunteered in Mrs. Springsteen’s fifth grade classroom and helped spread mulch in the flower beds surrounding the school. Seniors assisting United Against Poverty volunteer Ms. Monica Bratley at St. Anastasia Catholic Church with recycling plastic bags into pillows and bed mats for the homeless in our community.

“My senior retreat was so much fun. I went to Heathcote Botanical Gardens and helped plant and clean the gardens. I was very grateful to give back and help out in any way I could,” said Cayli Russo, a John Carroll senior. “The day showed me how truly blessed I am to be a part of such an amazing community. I am also very grateful for everyone who pitched in to make this senior retreat so memorable.”
