JOHN CARROLL HIGH SCHOOL’S NEW CLASS SCHEDULE INVITES STUDENTS TO ENJOY TIME AS A COMMUNITY DURING SCHOOL HOURS
FORT PIERCE – John Carroll High School launched a new class schedule in August of 2022, including a weekly time block for campus community engagement. This session, also referred to as community FLEX time, invites students to choose the activity they would like to partake in that week.
The new class schedule features a modified block schedule unique to the school. Students attend their classes three times a week for 72-minute periods. There are two sessions throughout the week where students have the opportunity for extra academic support or fellowship via non-academic community FLEX events. Academic support sessions are referred to as WIN, an acronym for What I Need.
“When we were thinking about creating a new schedule for the 2022-2023 school year, we wanted to keep our root belief that ‘we are a community united in Christ’s love’ as a central focus,” said Corey Heroux, John Carroll High School principal. “In a world awash with digital forms of communication, we wanted to challenge our students to be counter cultural and to engage in face-to-face relationship building with no phones allowed. Community FLEX time also offers students a ‘brain-break’ of sorts during a busy academic day. We are so pleased with the results of this new initiative thus far this year!”
Community FLEX sessions invite students to manage their free time on campus, as they choose which community sessions they prefer. Community FLEX activities have included painting outdoors in the school’s grotto, board games, karaoke, intramural volleyball and dodgeball, relay games, fishing, games on the football field, theatre improv, and time to reflect in the on-campus Chapel.
“The addition of FLEX periods to the schedule this year has been amazing. It has created a time for us to have a period to get some work done or spend some community time with friends,” said Carson Koomen, John Carroll High School senior and student body secretary. “Another great part of having the FLEX sessions is the ability to have mass in the schedule without having to adjust the class length or schedule. I have absolutely loved what the FLEX periods have done for me this year.”
John Carroll’s community FLEX periods have shown to reduce stress and anxiety, helping students focus and be more productive.
“Our new community FLEX sessions welcome our students to get to know each other without their phones. They get to play games, learn new skills, have fun, and laugh, which are great stress relievers,” said Cyndee Shevak, John Carroll High School math department chair. “The other FLEX session allows students time during the school day to obtain extra help from their teachers, complete their homework, work on projects and make up tests without having to come after school. FLEX is a win-win situation for teachers and students.”
John Carroll believes students, faculty and staff are always learning, and FLEX and WIN sessions strongly support this root belief.
