RAMS' VERCILLO RETIRING

Longtime John Carroll Catholic fixture Dave Vercillo is retiring.

Vercillo, who was the Golden Rams’ defensive coordinator the past two years, coached 26 seasons over five decades at John Carroll. He also had coaching stints at St. Thomas Aquinas, LaBelle and Kent (Wash.)-Kentridge.

Vercillo had a 75-85 record in 16 years (1977-81, 1989-99) as head coach at John Carroll. He also had coached defensive backs and offensive linemen at John Carroll.

“If you go to any John Carroll player from the 1980s to now and mention Dave’s name, they all love him,” said John Carroll coach Mike Watkins, who credits Vercillo for convincing him to play football in high school. “We have guys come out to our games just to see him. He’s really kind of an icon for our football culture. He is so much fun to coach with and be around. He’s very knowledgeable and he’s a great communicator.

“Our players would never go into a game with any confusion — every player knew what was expected of him. That was his best feature. He’s going to be sorely missed.”

Jeff Miret has been promoted to defensive coordinator to replace Vercillo. Miret has been the linebackers coach at John Carroll the past two seasons.
