John Carroll High School is proud to participate in the AP Capstone Program

John Carroll High School is proud to announce that it has officially been selected to participate in the Advanced Placement Capstone Program. JCHS is the only high school, public or private, in the four-county area that will be offering this challenging program. This exceptional opportunity allows students to enhance their academic development at JCHS!

The AP Capstone is an innovative program from the College Board that equips high school students with the independent research, collaborative teamwork, and communication skills that are increasingly valued by colleges. AP Capstone is built on the foundation of a new, two-course high school sequence, AP Seminar and AP Research. It is designed to complement and enhance the in-depth discipline-specific study provided through other AP courses.

According to College Board, the AP Capstone program was developed with the intent to test studentsí performance on tasks, assessments, and application of research methodology; complement the rigor of AP courses and exams by challenging them to think critically and creatively; plan and conduct a study or investigation; propose solutions to real-world problems; plan and produce communication in various forms; collaborate to solve a problem; and integrate, synthesize, and make cross-curricular connections.

Next fall, select 11th grade students will begin the AP Seminar course. In this course, students are assessed through a team project and presentation, a research-based essay and presentation, and a written exam. The following year, the students will take the AP Research course in which they are assessed through an academic thesis accompanied by public presentation and defense. Both courses will be scored based on the set components and are reported on the standard 1-5 AP scoring scale.

Students participating in the AP Capstone must also take 4 AP courses and exams throughout high school. If students earn scores of 3 or higher in both of the AP Capstone courses but not on the four additional AP Exams, they will receive the AP Seminar and Research Certificate, signifying successful performance in those courses. Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in both of the AP Capstone courses and on 4 additional AP Exams of their choosing will receive the AP Capstone Diploma.

John Carroll is proud to provide a rigorous academic program for students, and participating in this program will add to those offerings. The school, which proudly serves students from the four-county area, is still enrolling students for the 2015-2016 school year.
