John Carroll High School to Build the Cole Coppola Learning Commons

On behalf of John Carroll, it is our pleasure to announce that we will be completely renovating the media center this summer. We are proud to rename the new state-of-the-art space as the Cole Coppola Learning Commons at the Monsignor Beerhalter Library.
The Learning Commons building will now feature multiple, collaborative workstations to better serve our students. A total of five zones have been designed with multiple modalities, including everything from a student lounge area to high-impact learning environments.
Now, when you enter the room, you will be find a set of “genius tables,” which feature charging stations for electronic devices and stool-height seating which is conducive for learning. The second zone showcases a mixture of six round and square portable tables which will allow for classroom instruction and group study.
Adjacent to this area will be a dedicated quiet zone for students to enjoy soft lounge-style seating and bean bag chairs. This center will also have a Sharewall magnetic marker board, which is made of porcelain-coated steel and allows students to utilize it as a place to write ideas and collaborate.
On the opposite side of the commons, a café zone will feature booths, a high top table and stools, lounge seating, and a Sharewall marker board. Students may utilize this area as a place to commune with one another.
The fifth zone is a high-tech Technology Enhanced Active Learning Center. This T.E.A.L. lab will incorporate rectangular and half-round tables for flexibility within the space. Additionally, four wall-mounted 60” smart televisions will be mounted on the walls for group learning, collaboration, and “plug and play” capability. A floor-to-ceiling write-on wall will be erected on the east side of this room, allowing students to diagram ideas on both sides of the wall.
We are also incorporating dynamic ergonomics in all of the seating components and have selected furniture pieces which are adaptable, allowing the spaces to be manipulated to be used for meetings, group study, presentations, etc.
JCHS has chosen the name Cole Coppola Learning Commons for this space to serve as a permanent memorial to Cole, who was a JCHS Sophomore when he passed away in September 2014. It is our goal is to open the Learning Commons in September 2015 and host a dedication ceremony to honor his legacy with his family, friends, classmates, and community members present. Cole lived life to the fullest, and we plan to keep his memory alive through this project and continued acts of kindness and Christianity.
Please help us make this dream become a reality. Thanks to several generous donors, we have raised nearly all of the funds to create the Learning Commons but are just $10,000 shy of our final goal. Prayerfully consider how you can support this project and donate a gift to finalize our giving campaign. Donations can be made online, www.JohnCarrollHigh.com or by calling Jennifer M. Trefelner, APR, CPRC at 772-464-5200, or emailing JenniferTrefelner@JohnCarrollHigh.com.
We look forward to unveiling this project in the near future and appreciate your prayers and support as we move forward. Updates will be posted on our website and social media sites as progress occurs. For any additional information, please contact the school.
