Alpha Peer Ministry

For over forty years, students at John Carroll have been chosen to lead their peers as ministers of the faith. The Alpha Peer Ministry program is an elective class which allows seniors an opportunity to collaborate in leading others toward an encounter with Christ using their own personal faith and talents. Commissioned by the Bishop of the Diocese of Palm Beach, the team hosts grade-level days of reflection for the freshman, sophomore, and junior classes. In addition, they offer days of reflection for local Catholic middle schools including Saint Joseph, Saint Helen, and Saint Anastasia.

Students enrolled in this class dive into scripture daily through lectio divina, and continue their own personal faith formation with the guidance of the Alpha coordinator, campus minister, and our school chaplain. They are encouraged throughout the year to grow in and explore their faith through vocational discernment and the application of their God-given gifts through service to others. This may include service projects, ministry involvement (e.g., music ministry, theatre ministry, lectoring, altar serving, etc.), or sponsoring Virtue = Strength ceremonies through John Carroll’s partnership with Sports Leader. The Alpha team regularly participates in the sacramental life by attending weekly mass together, as well as frequenting adoration and reconciliation. Throughout the year, each member of the team will compose and present a written testimony of their faith journey.

These students are held to the highest standard as servant leaders and are models for the excellence expected of any Catholic school student. Juniors are encouraged to inquire with interest in this rewarding ministry following their day of reflection. Applications will become available after that date through the Office of Faith and Service, with interviews and selection to follow.
