We Love Christ by Serving Others With Joy

The John Carroll Christian Service Program seeks to provide students with opportunities to bear witness to the inherent human dignity with which we are all born: to provide for the needs of our fellow man, to provide for the needs of our natural world, and to discern their vocation through the exploration of various fields to which they feel called.  This program differentiates type of service by a designation of outreach or church and school. Throughout a student’s four years at JCHS, he or she will be challenged to perform acts of service designated as outreach which meet needs within our greater community, or church and school by serving in functions throughout the school day and in JC-sponsored, extracurricular events.  John Carroll is an institution concerned not only in the academic success of its students, but in their formation as whole persons made uniquely in the image of God. Service, in the eyes of our school community, should be an opportunity to grow – to explore one's vocation while finding fulfillment in loving others and the natural world.

OUTREACH service is done by providing for individuals or organizations who are in need within the larger community. Examples of OUTREACH service are:

  • Providing companionship for people at assisted living facilities
  • Mentoring children at a summer camp or in a sports league
  • Volunteering at a non-profit organization such as United Against Poverty, Treasure Coast Food Bank, GraceWay Village, Fort Pierce Women’s Care Center, etc.
  • Volunteering at an event such as a fundraiser for a non-profit organization

CHURCH/SCHOOL service is done to support and enhance the mission of one’s academic institution or one’s home parish. Examples of CHURCH/SCHOOL service are:

  • Volunteering at a JCHS event such as receptions, Open House, club events, annual gala, etc.
  • Assisting the JCHS faculty/staff with extracurricular activities
  • Assisting the JCHS athletic department at practices and games
  • Volunteer in a church ministry such as altar serving, lectoring, EMHC, or choir
  • Donating goods to a JCHS school or club sponsored service drive

Unpaid work done for family members, for-profit businesses, or friends does not qualify for the John Carroll Christian Service Program.

Student Service Requirements for the JCHS Christian Service Program:

All JCHS graduates are responsible for completing a minimum of 100 total service hours prior to their Senior midterms. A minimum of 50 hours must be categorized as outreach. The remaining 50 hours may be all outreach, all church/school, or a mix of both. For each grade level, it is recommended students complete 25 hours per year to remain on track for their final service requirement by Senior midterms.

It is our school’s sincere hope that students begin to see their Christian service as an extension of their personal faith lives, exceeding these base requirements as a result.  We challenge all students to find a personal passion for service and to respond generously with their time and talents.

X2VOL (Intellivol): JCHS partners with a student service tracking site – x2VOL.com – in order to organize and track student volunteer hours. x2VOL is the leading service hour tracking program in the country, with both a web-based application and an iPad application for student use.  It is used by Catholic schools around the country to help students track and develop their commitment to service. Students are highly encouraged to log on to x2VOL.com on a weekly basis to view student service opportunities and manage their accounts.

Students should log in through the Chrome browser using Google Single Sign-On (SSO). Their John Carroll email address is already configured to an account through this service, and does not require the creation of a new account or password. See Mr. Kimmelman with issues.

Hours must be submitted into x2VOL in a timely manner.

  • Hours must be logged and verified within 30 days of completion in order to be accepted.
  • Hours older than 30 days will be denied, after which students are afforded one more attempt at submission for verification and subsequent approval.

Hours must be submitted and verified within a timely manner, (within 30 days of the completed service opportunity). Seniors must have met their required 100-hour minimum by spring break in order to be eligible for senior activities such as Prom, GradBash, Senior Skip Day, Senior Awards, and more. Seniors who do not meet these requirements will not be eligible for the aforementioned activities, and in addition are barred from participation in lunch-time intramurals, athletic practices and games, and other activities at the discretion of administration pending their completion of the minimum 100 hours during mandatory after-school detentions.

Any hours earned during a given school year that are older than thirty days and are submitted after the final day of school may not be approved at the discretion of the Director of Liturgy and Campus Ministry.

Service hours are not counted as a percentage of a student’s midterm or final grade.
Students must complete a reflection with each submission, providing details as to why the service they provided constitutes “Christian service,” and how it impacted them personally. Hours must be verified for approval.

Transfer Students must also complete 100 service hours by the last day of their Senor midterms.  During the enrollment process, transfer students must provide official documentation from their original school of previously earned hours. These documents must be signed by a member of their previous school’s administrative team or a guidance counselor.

Please Note: Fulfilling service requirements is the student’s responsibility; however, parents are encouraged to log on to their son and/or daughter’s account using their student’s John Carroll Gmail account to track their yearly progress, view upcoming service opportunities, and to have conversations about how their child may best use their gifts and talents to serve others.
